Deep Dive: Canadian Wildlife Mini Series Vol. 1
Posted by Siri Olson on
Animal relationships reveal the deep connections that sustain life and the intricate balance of ecosystems. These interactions—whether symbiotic, competitive, or predatory—extend beyond mere survival, highlighting the interconnectedness and mutual dependence that keep nature in harmony.
This trio of mini puzzles focuses on the mutualistic bonds between three sets of animals: the magpie and the elk, the cowbird and the bison, and the raven and the wolf. The Hidden Whimwham uses two animal whimsies from each puzzle to create a mosaic of these hidden friendships.
The relationship between wolves and ravens is particularly notable. Ravens guide wolves to potential prey and then share in the feast after the wolves have moved on. They work together for mutual benefit and with respect for each other’s roles in nature. There is a Coast Salish story that tells of a wolf pup who transforms into a raven to help his mother hunt during the harsh winter months. When spring arrives, the Creator makes this transformation permanent. To this day, the wolf family calls out to say goodnight to the raven who watches over them.
Just as many animals rely on each other for survival, humans depend on one another for emotional, social, and physical well-being. The balance found in nature reflects the balance we seek in our lives—between work and rest, giving and receiving, independence and community. These relationships remind us that survival and success are collective efforts, grounded in respect for the delicate balance of life.
